*Kai-awase is an old Japanese game with shells. This game was born during the Heian era (794-1185). Inside the shells there were elaborate paintings and the purpose of this game was to find the other half that matched.
During the Edo period clam shells were used for this game. Clams can only be combined with matched shells. That is why the kai-awase patterns symbolize happy family or happy couple.
